The Lappa Valley Steam Railway

Share

The Lappa Valley Steam Railway is a minimum gauge railway located near Newquay in Cornwall. It will take you on a scenic woodland tour aboard a steam engine train.

The railway runs on one of the oldest railway trackbeds in Cornwall. Opened in 1849 as a mineral line from Newquay to East Wheal Rose, it later became part of the Great Western Railway’s Newquay to Chacewater branch line. This was closed in 1963, and in 1974 Eric Booth, the founder of Lappa Valley, reopened part of the line as a narrow-gauge railway.

The railway functions as a tourist attraction, running from Benny Halt to East Wheal Rose. There are three separate miniature railways running through this oasis of conservation, where wildlife thrives in a protected environment. Buzzards, Ravens, Woodpeckers and Mallards live in the valley and in the summer Swallows nest at East Wheal Rose. On warm days, beautiful dragonflies skim over the lake.

Among the wildlife, squirrels and rabbits are common and, if you are lucky, you may see one of the stoats, badgers, foxes and deer which frequent the Valley. Sometimes bats can been seen in the early evening in the summer months.

If you’re interested in historic buildings, you can visit the East Wheal Rose Mine Engine House. Dating from 1882, this was housed of the largest mine engine pumps in Cornwall. Other attractions at Lappa Valley Steam Railway include children’s’ play area, canoes, a maze, pedal bikes and a play castle.

Cornwall’s Wild Food

Share

Cornwall’s wealth is in its spectacular natural beauty and maritime delights. Nearly every inch of its coastline can be walked. It also enjoys one of the mildest climates in the UK, thanks to the Gulf Stream, bringing warm air from the Caribbean towards North West Europe. But Cornwall is renowned for its seafood too.

Fifteen Cornwall is an inspiring restaurant from Jamie Oliver and his talented chefs; bringing an innovative menu of the best seasonal and local produce in Cornwall.

Cornwall has an abundance of wild food on land, sea and air. The county has the right mix of outgoing people and wild resources that are necessary in order that the concept of wild food as an adjunct to farmed foods can work in the 21st Century. Wild food is traditional yet common knowledge that has been largely lost since the Second World War when mass production of food became the standard.

Now, Fifteen Cornwall is bringing the wild food back with “hearty, traditional game, like roast pheasant; venison ragu and Cornish partridge; some of the counties beautiful, lesser known varieties of fish; and delicious vegetables like wild fennel and samphire from Cornwall’s coastline and moorlands.”

According to Fifteen Cornwall “each morning a small army of local farmers, fishermen and growers arrive on our doorstep with a feast of food plucked fresh from the fields and sea.” They say over 80% of what they serve is Cornish.

Jamie Oliver’s FIFTEEN restaurant is only 40 minutes west along the coast from Padstow. Where to find luxury hotels in Padstow?

The Metropole Hotel is a landmark hotel in Padstow. Perched on a hill, overlooking the town, harbour and the Camel Estuary, The Met has views that are hard to beat.
